Freedom doesn’t fail the way we think it does

Every free civilisation inherits a problem it cannot escape.
Freedom is not static. It is not self-renewing. It does not persist simply because it once existed. It moves through generations, changing form as it goes — and each transition introduces a different danger.
Some generations must win freedom.
Some must preserve it.
Some must restore it when preservation fails.
The Mistake of Modern Societies
The mistake of modern societies is not that they forget how freedom is won. History books still recount revolutions, wars, and resistance. The deeper mistake is forgetting how freedom is kept — and assuming that the skills required for its founding are the same as those required for its preservation.
They are not.
The generation that fights tyranny learns courage, sacrifice, and solidarity under pressure. It learns the cost of submission. It learns, viscerally, that some evils cannot be reasoned with and must be resisted.
But those lessons, once learned, create a new problem: how to hand freedom to those who did not earn it, without weakening it in the process.
This is the handover problem.
The Handover Problem
Freedom won through force must be carried forward through restraint. Freedom defended through violence must later be sustained through judgment. The skills that overthrow tyranny are not the same skills that prevent its return.
A civilisation that fails to understand this transition does not remain free for long.
The generation born into freedom faces a paradox. They inherit the benefits of courage without its costs, the fruits of sacrifice without its memory. What was once paid for in blood now arrives as infrastructure, institutions, and assumed norms.
This inheritance is dangerously fragile.
Not because freedom is corrupting, but because unearned freedom feels permanent. Without lived memory of loss, constraint feels oppressive. Limits feel arbitrary. Authority feels unnecessary. The discipline that once protected liberty begins to look like domination.
In this phase, the task is no longer resistance — it is formation.
The Work of Preservation
The work of preservation is quieter and less celebrated than revolution. It does not produce heroes. It produces adults capable of restraint, capable of judgment, capable of acting without needing permission and refraining without needing force.
This work is slow. It is relational. It happens in families long before it appears in politics.
And because it is slow and unglamorous, it is often neglected.
